Good afternoon, riders.
The bus blog joins DART employees and thousands of DART riders who came to know and love 30-year veteran bus operator James Salter in congratulating him on his recent retirement.
His warm greetings and comedic ways were known even to riders who come aboard DART only during the State Fair, for which Salter dressed up every year as “Harley Worthit,” a hobo with a habit of hijacking buses. He is known to have taken the practical joke so far as to pretend to be sleeping under a blanket of newspapers on a bench near the Capitol, then wake, board the DART bus about to head out to the fairgrounds, and declare to the passengers that if the driver wasn’t around he’d drive them to the fair himself.
In this video, Salter, dressed as his alter-ego, recalls the story in a speech at his retirement party. The video starts as he’s explaining how he had covered himself in newspapers. A handful of other stories follow. (The bus blog apologizes in advance for the amateurish and at-times shaky video.) Enjoy.
